A professional portfolio is an indispensable item for models and for those looking to break into the industry. It is the first impression you imprint on potential agencies and clients looking to work with you, so it is crucial that you spend time on it if you want to kickstart or prolong your career. GK London specialise in producing fantastic modelling portfolios, and we have identified what it takes to get the best ones.
Show What Kind Of Model You Are
Modelling is a ruthless business, and unfortunately, you don’t get to decide what you do, the industry does. Your portfolio must be able to distinguish what kind of model you are, and should reflect what market you are tailored for. This can include fashion, catwalk, glamour, commercial, fitness or even swimsuit/lingerie modelling. It is worth remembering that for each market, different types of pictures are required. For instance, in commercial modelling – smiling headshots are more important than in other types of modelling, whereas glamour and lingerie modelling are focussed around the body and full length shots. No matter what market you are targeting, your portfolio should always include a few different headshots, with a variety of different angles and expressions.
Show Diversity
While modelling does somewhat typecast you, it’s greatly encouraged for you to show your versatility in your portfolio that highlight the different facets of your look, and as you eventually (and hopefully) get more work, it should expand with more photos. If your portfolio can successfully portray you showing different personalities, moods and characters, then this will put you in good stead in securing work. Presenting yourself with no makeup in at least one picture is highly recommended because it shows you in your raw form, and gives a clearer insight on how you can be styled. Having 1 or 2 black and white pictures in your portfolio can also be a great asset, as they are artistic and show you in a different light.
Set Your Standards High
Although you need to showcase your looks in different ways, your modelling portfolio should be about quality over quantity, so make sure you peruse over all your photographs carefully and select the right ones. Having a critical eye is essential, as agencies and clients are not likely to forget a bad picture! Aspiring models should have in the region of 6 – 12 photographs in their portfolio when visiting a model agency for the first time, while more established models should aim to have up to 25 photos.
All You Need Is Us
It is a common misconception that you will require more than 1 photographer for your portfolio to showcase all of your different looks, but here at GK, we are able to bring out the best in you, in a multitude of styles. Rather than choosing a solo photographer, we are able to give you the full treatment, with first class hairstylists and makeup artists at your disposal. Our creative team have worked with so many high profile models and A-listers, as well as all the prestige fashion events around the globe, with more than 18 years experience to match, so it can be safe to say that your portfolio is in perfect hands.
